Black Garlic for Exercise and Recovery: Do the Studies Match the Product?
29 September 2026
Searches for black garlic for exercise or recovery can surface studies that are actually about ordinary garlic extract or aged garlic extract.
Garlic extract studies are not automatically black-garlic studies
A crossover study in healthy adults found changes in oxidative and inflammatory responses during cycling after four weeks of a garlic extract, while 40-km time-trial performance itself was not improved. The preparation was garlic extract, not generic black garlic.
Aged garlic extract has separate athlete research
A randomized trial of a branded aged garlic extract reported changes in aerobic-fitness and recovery measures in middle-aged recreational endurance athletes. Aged garlic extract should not be silently renamed black garlic.
Acute garlic studies add another preparation
Other exercise studies have used powdered garlic or garlic immediately after exercise, again demonstrating why the word “garlic” alone is not enough to identify an intervention.
What can be claimed for a black-garlic capsule?
Without a preparation-matched human trial, the safest conclusion is that exercise research on other garlic products is interesting but not direct proof for a retail black-garlic supplement.
